WTRL #144 – Wandering Flats
Course Notes – 1 Laps – 25.1km (145m elevation)
New Course for the notes this week, so no obvious Time Predicting going on…more on this below
From a DS point of view, this course doesn’t offer much that is scary.
For 17 of the 25km, the course is pretty much flat, with the odd 3% bump here and there that shouldn’t cause issues. Early on, don’t let heavier riders pull away from lighter in excitement of the start and downhill. Do your best to work the team as a unit across the flat middle part of the race. Then dispose of your less w/kg able riders to be left with 4 going over the final 6km.
Full Details below. Distances are full race distance, starting from the pens. Use the PRINT button for a simplified print out.
Don’t Forget to try my TTT Time Predictor and Power Planner – complete with DS Call Sheet. As I mentioned, this is a new course, so there are no official WTRL records to go on. However, at 25.3km and with a similar (though admittedly shorter) single climb, using France RGV as a proxy should give you a fair idea of your time. Add perhaps a couple of minutes, given the longer and more knarly climb, but this should give you a good idea of the effort time, even if my predictions won’t be their usual accuracy.
Distance | Feature Length | Elevation | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
LAP 1 | |||
0m | 100m | Straight out the pens and into a short descent | |
100m | 1.9km | -3% | Descnding for around 2km (with a short kick up at 700m), just watch for early splits. If your lighter riders are not on board early, you are in danger of losing them straight away |
2km | 17km | Bumps and lips here and there, but taken at speed they should be fine Get into your Power Planner rotations and push the 130% Intervals. | |
19km | 2km | 3% | Should have had plenty of time to see who is feeling good. Consider using heavier or less w/kg endowed team members early and often, with a view to dropping them at this point. 3% average, but the odd 6, 8 and even 10% tiny bits. AGREE A W/KG at this point, ideally just above everyone’s threshold if similar ability. |
21km | 4km | Off the climb and a paceline charge for home with whomever has anything left. | |
This last few km could all be done in 5-6mins, so lots of short hard surges by each rider should see you home. | |||
